‘Recent Commission 2011’

Please google wtb piers bramhall flag you tube and click for the video called ‘The Official Piers Bramhall Flag’ to see Cynth Weyman in her Pembrokeshire studio making the art quilt logo banner. It was designed by Weiden & Kennedy Advertising Agency who commissioned her for The Welsh Tourist Board’s visit wales tourism campaign ‘We Want Piers Bramhall’ for 2011-12 on facebook, you tube and television adverts. Cynth Weyman transformed W&K’s logo design to textiles using her technique Intaglio Strati, embroidery, applique and mola work. It was a very exciting project indeed working alongside an extensive team of coordinators, designers and film makers from London and Cardiff. As part of the campaign, Piers is going on a wonderful holiday to Wales. W&K an international company, who have designed major TV and facebook adverts eg Coca Cola, Nike, Honda and many more, discovered Cynth Weyman as a Welsh textile artist on this website. Makes all the IT efforts worthwhile.

Intaglio Strati’ Courses and Talks 2011 onwards

Courses:

Two different visitors who discovered Cynth at a recent Artist in Residency at Aberglasney, invited her to visit Canada to run a course in Kingston and meet other artists in Victoria and Vancouver in 2011.

Experienced textile quilters and makers attended Cynth Weyman’s course at the Quilt & Stitch store in Kingston, Ontario. They painted quick pictures and designs to transform into small Intaglio Strati art quilts/pictures. Their enthusiasm and support for Cynth’s workshops was second to none i.e. from students and the store’s staff and organisers. She could not stop them from working. Some even worked overnight. They discovered that her technique could offer them more freedom than traditional quilting which suited time available to create textile artworks in modern day living.

Students explored textures, fabrics and simple techniques to create dramatic effects. They also contributed to the How To Do Intaglio Strati section of Cynth’s forthcoming book ‘Retire to Wear Purple, No Chance!’. We exchanged lots of ideas and terms. Following the course in Kingston, Cynth proceeded across Canada and met other artists in Victoria and Vancouver to share ideas and ways of working in the arts. Seeing Inuit sculptures and the late Emily Carr’s artworks in the flesh was a real bonus too.

Talks to Groups:

Cynth’s talks are suitable for arts groups, U3a’s and Embroidery Guilds and are usually run outside of the tourist season. They offer a mixture of shared art and textile techniques and behind the scenes stories of an artist’s life.

Using vibrant Indian cottons and silks, Cynth Weyman has created her own unique art form and named it ‘Intaglio Strati’. Cynth Weyman is inspired by the beauty of the countryside, the sea and human form, catches and enhances her chosen subjects in inks and watercolours, and then translates images into textile reliefs creating textile relief panels and art quilts.

Cynth insists that ‘Intaglio Strati’ just grew and developed by itself. It is meticulously created through sketching, layering fabrics, machine and hand stitching, couching and bead embellishment. “Using exquisite colours and textures, Cynth’s ‘Intaglio Strati’ tells stories, some humorous, some touching, some personal, but all simply amazing” says Lady Chalmers, who is the proud owner of ‘Rock Woman – Pwllgwaelod’ art quilt.

Exhibitions & Projects 2012:

The Cloisters Gallery at St David’s Cathedral (May 16th-28th): Many visitors have likened her work to stained glass windows - but in textiles. She has been invited for the second time to exhibit and discuss her techniques and art works. The venue is light and airy and ideally suited to Cynth Weyman’s collection called ‘Diary of an Artist’. It’s another wonderful opportunity to see her work at its best.

Retire to Wear Purple – No Chance!’ forthcoming book: Cynth shares her techniques and thoughts freely. The book will offer a pictorial history of Cynth’s journey from paint to fabric. “I have no doubt that the book will inspire both novices and experienced artists and needle workers and excite art enthusiasts” says Jan Chalmers who has written the forward. Textile artists have shown serious interest from the UK, Canada and South Africa.

Using Designs from Current artworks: An EEC Textiles Technology Project team from Coleg Sir Gar and Swansea University has invited Cynth to explore some new opportunities in moving her artworks forward by creating designs from shapes and colours within her art quilt collection. Arton Gallery Kyoto Japan 7th-19th April 2009

‘Babling Brook over Sunlit Bronze Stones’ textile relief was selected to be exhibited at Arton Gallery as part of ‘The Cosmos in CD cases’. This special show was organized by Fishguard Arts Society. Working on such a small scale was a real challenge for her as many of Cynth’s textile panels and art quilts are up to 4ft x6ft. However, she managed to include many silk layers and a thin row of beads – the final piece just fitted into the CD case. The piece, inspired by the stream behind Nant Y Coy, where Cynth has had previous artist in residencies, was selected for the gallery’s publicity poster, invitation card and website adding an extra thrill. The thrill still remains!
